Vietnam’s Hai Duong begins harvesting longan for exports
A conference to mark the start of the longan harvest season for overseas markets was held in Chi Linh City in the northern Vietnamese of Hai Duong on Thursday.
The event was co-hosted by the Hai Duong Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, the Hai Duong Department of Industry and Trade, and the authorities of Chi Linh City.
This year, 740 hectares of longan-growing areas in Chi Linh have produced an estimated output of 4,000 metric tons.
Notably, more than 40 hectares of the longan-growing areas have been granted cultivation area codes for exports to demanding markets such as the European Union (EU), Singapore, the U.S., Australia, and New Zealand, with an expected output of approximately 250 metric tons.
A representative of FUSA Organic Agriculture Joint Stock Company said that the firm will start to purchase and process longan for the Europe market in the next few days.
The company expects to export between 20 and 30 metric tons of Chi Linh longan to 300 supermarkets in the UK and EU member countries in 2021.
Amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, Chi Linh City authorities have cooperated with exporters, food stores, supermarkets, and ecommerce platforms to sell longan.
Thanks to the efforts, the local specialty has become available on the ecommerce platform voso.vn of the parcel courier service provider Viettel Post at a price of VND93,000 (US$4) per three-kilogram pack.
Bui Van Thang, director of the Hai Duong Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, said that potential new markets in Vietnam’s central and southern regions are Chi Linh longan’s next targets after gaining popularity in Hanoi and the northern provinces of Quang Ninh and Bac Ninh, and Hai Phong City.
